The Smooth Coneflower (Echinacea laevigata) is a native medicinal plant federally listed as endangered. Several populations around southwestern Virginia make this location one of the strongholds for this species. The government’s management plan for the Smooth Coneflower has solicited “research assistance from colleges and universities”. We are proposing to contribute to the long-term monitoring of these local populations to help determine their status (increasing, stable, decreasing) and conservation threats. Down the road we may also become involved with developing conservation agreements and localized management plans.
